College Football Anyone?

With fall on the horizon, a lot of sports are starting preseason camps or preseason games.  College football is one of the favorites during this time of the year.  Maybe it’s because we cheer on our Alma mater, root for a specific team, or follow a local team.  Whatever the case is, the football frenzy is beginning.

Over the summer, we had the pleasure and privilege to train several young athletes—including some who recently left to their respected schools.  One of these athletes, Blake Stanton, is a freshman at University of Oregon. He’s turning heads and climbing his way up on the roster.  Keep an eye out for this kid in the upcoming and future seasons with the Ducks.  Nice work Blake!

Audra Sampley’s Weight Loss Journey

Everyone is on a journey of some kind, whether it’s career, family, or a healthy lifestyle. Two weeks ago, a girl named Audra Sampley—who I haven’t spoken to in 13 years—reached out to me. She asked me to help her lose 150 pounds!

Audra is a wife, a student, and the mother of three children.  The most challenging part is that she lives in Alabama, while I’m here in Los Angeles.  The beauty of the situation is that this journey is all about the power of having the right mindset, which is something that we focus on here at Core Performance.

I’m not here to push her or make sure shes’ working out as hard as possible, and I can’t count her calories each day. What I can do is is challenge and encourage her to make the changes needed to live a healthy, more fulfilling lifestyle.  The rest is up to her.

In just two weeks, Audra has already lost 11 pounds by eating a balanced diet, exercising, keeping a positive outlook, and using the determination that comes from deep within. I hope that her journey will inspire you as much as she has inspired me.  Please follow Audra on her journey to weight loss! She could use your encouragement, and in the process, your life may be transformed as well!

What’s In Your Pantry?

The column Pantry Raid in the Los Angeles Times looks at what people actually eat each day and analyzes it. How would you stack up if our nutrition team took you up on this challenge? The latest entry in this series profiles a couple who eats a primarily vegan diet that isn’t as healthy as it could be. What are some small changes you could make to give yourself a bit more energy during the day?

Gua Sha

Those of you who’ve seen us in the physical therapy department know what a gua sha is.  It’s a plastic tool used to release soft tissue and fascia that surround the muscle and rests under the skin.  The interesting thing about the gua sha is that it was used by the Chinese about 1000 yrs ago.  Pretty amazing.  They were the world’s first physical therapists.

On Days You Drag….

Today, one of my colleagues told me he had “one of THOSE workouts” this morning, and I could totally relate. Don’t we all have those days when we’re just dragging out of bed, and it’s tough to get in to the gym? What do you do to fix it? Eat something to boost your energy? Put on your favorite song and just push through it?

I usually ask a friend to tag along with me on “THOSE” days for extra motivation. In the event that I can’t find a workout buddy, I look for external motivation like this woman’s incredible commitment to triathlon training or Da’Sean Butler’s hard work to rebound from injury at Athletes’ Performance, Florida. What do you do on days you don’t feel like getting to the gym?

CPC @ Intel

You may have already heard that CPC has a new campus at Intel’s facility in Chandler, Arizona, so you may find yourself in an airport, meeting, or road race with someone who knows exactly what you mean when you say “ESD” or who can explain the CPro in 30 seconds flat. In addition to benefit of a large community created through out multiple locations, the response to an on-site CPC has been amazing. Membership sold out in less than an hour! So next time you get a tough day on the bike or a challenging set of RDL’s, know that your colleagues in Chandler are working hard alongside you. Happy Monday everyone!

Kindness

“Wherever there is a human being, there is an opportunity for kindness.” - Seneca

Sometimes we get busy in life and we forget that it’s important to be aware of others around us.  This week, I’m challenging you to step out and do something that will make someone’s day. It may be paying for the person behind you in a drive through, dropping a few dollars into someone’s bucket, or making a phone call to tell someone how much they matter. Whatever it may look like, there are opportunities all around us to show acts of kindness!  Embrace those moments and make a difference whenever you can!
